SUGIYAMA - The Beauty of Handicraft

The third exhibition of SUGIYAMA at Fuorisalone in Milan, SUGIYAMA, Japanese Minimalist Solid Iron Furniture, 8-12 April 2025 at Galleria Antonio Battaglia, Milano

SUGIYAMA, the manufacturer of a minimalist “iron furniture” brand that is heir to Japanese craftsmanship, will hold an exhibition at the Fuorisalone 2025 in Milan, following their second exhibition last year. SUGIYAMA is based in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, located in central Japan. Seki is one of the most famous towns in Japan, renowned for the many well-known manufacturers based here, including swordsmiths who take great pride in their craftsmanship. Founded in 1962, the company initially produced parts for automobiles and railroad cars. Since 2000, SUGIYAMA has been transformed into a manufacturer of "Iron Furniture" brand products, utilising the company's skilled techniques and facilities to carry out all processes from planning to design and production.

The concept of our third exhibition is “The Beauty of Handicraft.” We will present new chairs that explore the possibilities of iron. These minimalist designs, which take advantage of iron's characteristics, possess functional beauty and serve as gems that remind us of traditional blacksmithing work while remaining in tune with modern life. The exhibited products will showcase the “Beauty of Handicraft” created through the cooperation of designers, who produce designs from hand-drawn sketches, and iron craftsmen, who are masters of their handiwork.

We present to you the new chairs showcased in the exhibition.

OBI armchair by Kohei Ito

This chair resembles a kimono's belt, known as an "obi". The shape conveys thinness and suppleness, and its moderate flexibility provides a comfortable seating experience. The design theme of this chair is to minimise the number of components while still providing a comfortable sitting experience and minimising the chair's physical presence.

ROTANDA chair by Kazuteru Murasawa

ROTONDA means “round” in Italian. Unlike solid iron furniture, this chair is made of round iron pipe, which is characterised by its gentle bending and soft touch. The details are also arranged with “roundness” in mind, and the wooden parts blend together to create a sense of unity. The chairs are designed to be beautifully stackable by rotating them into a compact position. You can enjoy different impressions depending on the colour of the frame.
