Suzugami Malleable Tin Plates

Suzugami means “suzu (tin)” + “kami (paper)”

Handcrafted by highly skilled Japanese craftsmen from the Shimatani Syouryu Workshop, which has been established since the Meiji era, Suzugami was created from the process of pounding tin that produces “Orin” (Buddhist singing bowls). The result is a durable, malleable tin that can be folded and bent to form any shape - a plate, a bowl, and even a flower vase.

It is said that there are less than 10 craftsmen in Japan that is able to produce "Orin" today. The key to creating the perfect “Orin” is in the tuning and there are no set rules on how to find this perfect balance. It is based on one's experience and a set of highly-trained ears, sensitive to even the slightest change in pitch.

The plate can be folded and bent like origami (Japanese folding papercraft) to form any shapes you want. Thanks to this unique feature, one sheet can be moulded repeatedly into different forms. It makes the perfect homeware to have as it is versatile for use in all occasions from dinner, parties to everyday use.
